Just Past Midnight came into being almost as an inevitability. Sometimes the universe just sets things up so perfectly that all you have to do is tip the first domino.More than twenty years in the making, this podcast is the culmination of hard work, happenstance, and the Hand of Fate. Not necessarily in that order.
The Short Version:Lifelong interest in the paranormal + access to numerous firsthand accounts + background in multimedia production = Just Past Midnight. The Long Version:I’ve been fascinated by ghosts, monsters, and all things paranormal since I was a kid. Over the years, I discovered that many of the people I met shared the same interest—and a surprising number had stories of their own encounters with the supernatural.Around the turn of the 21st century, I decided to start collecting these stories. Back then, it was a hodgepodge of videotapes, audio recordings, emails, and (gasp) handwritten accounts. Soon, a pattern began to emerge—nearly everyone I spoke to knew of someone else I "really should talk to" about ghostly happenings or general weirdness. Things just sort of snowballed from there.Meanwhile, I'd been working as a freelance creative professional, providing visual design, copywriting, and audio/video production for corporate entities, as well as ideation, visual effects (CG), and scriptwriting for film and television. In short, storytelling has always been in my DNA.Now, more than twenty years later, I have a formidable archive of stories to draw from. For the podcast, I’ve reconnected with many of those voices from the past, revisiting and recapturing their accounts with updated technology—each one as close to studio-quality as possible, for that immersive feeling of uncanny closeness, as if the tale is unfolding right there in the room with you.But this is only the beginning. My plan is to begin weaving listener content into the mix so that, eventually, the show will be composed entirely of listener-based stories, thereby fostering a real sense of community around the podcast. There are so many eerie tales just waiting to be told. Will yours be one of them?

Just Past Midnight is all about stories. Experiences. The telling of the tale. The sharing of a moment in time. Our contributors, therefore, are the heart and soul of this podcast. We strive to accommodate each contributor in whatever way they require to ensure their comfort in sharing their story with us. Storytelling is an art form as old as humankind itself, and one that defines us as a species. From the very first recollections and retellings in firelit caves tens of thousands of years ago to the interactive, virtual reality and AI-driven experiences of today, storytelling has remained central to human culture. It's a certainty that, among the very first stories ever told were descriptions of things that surprised, shocked, confounded, or terrified the storyteller. No doubt these were favorites among ancient listeners. I can't think of a better example of how some things never change. Now, perhaps in some ways more than ever, we are fascinated, thrilled, and drawn in by tales of the unknown. For, in spite of the incredible advancements in science and technology, there yet remains a shadowy realm beyond the reach of scientific or technological scrutiny. It is into those shadows that Just Past Midnight invites listeners to venture. If you have a story, we'd love to hear it.
Ah! You've found the secret section. Well, semi-secret, anyway. This is where I shall post my late-night musings as they come upon me. Spooky thoughts? Quite likely. Nuggets of wisdom? Maybe. The ramblings of a madman? Most assuredly.

Wednesday, 10/09/25Well, the podcast has officially launched. Just in time for "Spooky Season." Or, as us GenXers like to call it, "Halloween." So here's to JPM. Raise your glass of... wait, what's the official drink of Hallo—er, Spooky Season? Oh hell, nevermind. Just raise a glass of whatever. And if you don't have a glass, you can pretend.Onward, into the unknown!
Wednesday, 10/15/25You know, it's really quite remarkable how many people out there have experienced something unexplainable during the course of their lives. It's also very unfortunate that many of those people elect to keep their experiences to themselves, for fear of having their "normalness" called into question. And, not to veer off into a tangent, but why would anyone want to be normal, anyway? How utterly boring. It's gotten better in recent years, to be sure. The old stigma seems to be fading, albeit slowly. But fifty years ago? Not something you would share around the water cooler. And that makes me think of this: How many fascinating, awe-inspiring, and possibly terrifying experiences have been lost forever? How many people who've encountered the paranormal, the supernatural, the otherworldly—whatever you want to call it—kept it to themselves, never told a soul, and took an amazing, one-of-a-kind, true story to the grave with them? This is one of the many reasons I've undertaken this podcast project (in addition to a couple of book projects in the past). Among other things, it serves as a kind of testament or record for these experiences. Because they matter, to put it simply. To put it very, very simply. They are glimpses into the Great Unknown, and therefore of utmost importance to all of us.For what greater question is there—or has there ever been—than "What's out there, on the other side?"
Friday, 10/31/25Yes, kids, it's Halloween. And forty-some-odd years since last I donned a costume and traipsed door-to-door for tricks and treats. Well, for treats, anyway. I don't recall ever experiencing any tricks. Not on any of those 1970s Halloween outings.Wait—there was that one year when my older brother tripped and fell on the way up to a house. It was one of those walk-up-the-driveway arrangements where there was a mini sidewalk leading from the driveway to the front door. Was it a tripwire? Why do I seem to recall there being a tripwire? Surely not. It would take a real monster to do something like that. But my brother tripped and fell and hurt himself somehow, enough to put a damper on the evening's fun. And I felt really bad for him. He and I never really got along, but I certainly empathized with him in that moment. Why did I go off on that tangent? Beats me. I'm just rambling here, as usual. Sharing a Halloween memory on a Halloween evening almost half a century later. Wow. That's trippy.Well, I hope all the children who'll be trick-or-treating tonight are careful and safe and being looked after by alert, responsible, loving parents. And I hope my own son—now a grown man—knows how very much his father loves and misses him.
